On Saturday, September 30, 2017, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity hosted its second annual House That Beet Built. More than 200 beer drinkers came together to enjoy live music, good food, a silent auction loaded with treasures, and some specially-prepared Habitat Beers. We had a great time at the best outdoor venue on James Island for a fundraiser to help build Heritage Oaks, an 18-home neighborhood nearby on Ferguson Road.

Beer!

Six local breweries showcased unique Habitat Brews. Check out your favorite breweries on the left. Admission was free and 100% of the proceeds will go towards building a Habitat home.

Partner Breweries:

Holy City Brewing: "Space Turtle"- A green tea IPA, with summer, equinox, and galaxy hops. 7.8% ABV

Freehouse Brewery: "Summa Don"- The wild offspring of the Life of Don, Summa Don is a hoppy, funky, fruity, sour, citrus delight. Funky sour IPA. 6.7% ABV

Oak Road Brewery: "Grant's Simcoe Red"- From our Forever Grateful series. It’s an annual series we do in Honor of a fallen homer brewer friend. This year’s release is a Hoppy Red Ale. Only 6 kegs ever made of this.

Low Tide Brewing: "Motorboatin' Melons"- A lightly tart and very refreshing summer beer. Whole watermelon and fresh mint was added to a Berliner Weiss base beer. The result is a surprisingly refreshing take on a tart german ale. We wanted to create a beer that was true to the Lowcountry, light and refreshing for our hot summer days, utilizing local ingredients to create a one of a kind beer that will excite both connoisseur and beer novices alike.

Frothy Beard Brewing Company: "Modified Neckbreaker Double IPA"- This heavy weight IPA comes in at 120 IBU’s and has a big citrus punch! We use local honey to ramp up the O.G. on this one. One too many and you might end up on a stretcher. Brewed with our favorite wrestler, B. Furious! 9.5% ABV

Tradesman Brewing Co.: "Bricklayer's Ale"- This is one of our best sellers and super tasty red ale. Technically, this beer qualifies as a double red, with big roasted malt favors, a sweet toffee aroma, and just enough hops to give it a clean finish and get you ready for another sip. 7.2%, 19 IBU

Jump Castle Riot kept us grooving

Jump Castle Riot (jumpcastleriot.com) is a local blues/rock band that has been described as having effortless chemistry and an explosive sound. “These kids have serious talent,” says Atlas Road Crew drummer Patrick Drohan. Jay’s mom put it another way: “Jump Castle Riot plays really loud” and the Charleston City Paper talks about putting out thier first CD in an 7/12 article.

Band members are Nina Murchison (vocals), Jay Van Raalte (guitar/vocals), John Palles (drums), and Richard Hartnett (bass). Only 2 years old, Jump Castle Riot venues have included Awendaw Green, the Pour House, Palmettos's Loading Dock Series, and on September 27, 2017, they headlined at the Windjammer for a second anniversary CD release party.

Silent Auction

Participants bid on generously donated items including  a 2 night stay at the downtown Charleston Marriott on Lockwood; a $100 gift card to the Tattooed Moose (either downtown or Johns Island); 2 season tickets to Threshold Repertory Theatre, a $50 gift card to Sermet's Cuisine Bar on James Island; two separate $50 gift cards to Sunrise Bistro on Johns Island; a Bowling Gift Certificate for 2 lanes for 2 hours along with 2 buckets of domestic beer at The Alley in downtown Charleston; a shirt, hat, and $10 gift card from Home Team BBQ; a Doggie Care Basket; Martini's-at-home basket from The Wine Shop of Charleston; a Bloody Mary Basket from Natural Blonde Bloody Mary Mix (local); two tickets to a show at Charleston Stage at Dock Street Theater; 2 gift baskets from Bohemian Bull with apparel and gift cards; and a meal for two from Veg Out Charleston.

Family fun all day

Families brought the whole clan. A giant Jenga blocks tower, cornhole, and plenty of room to run entertained the kiddos while adults enjoyed our favorite Habitat Brews.

Bohemian Bull has a great menu for munchies or a meal, as well as other alcoholic and non-alcoholic libations.

Costs

  • Free admission
